Hello! I’m back! I’ve been gone for a minute, but I’m back. A lot has happened during my time away and I’ve slowly started becoming a more conscious consumer. After watching, A Plastic Ocean, I realized that this whole plastic problem is much bigger than I thought. I highly recommend watching it (it’s on Netflix)! I won’t go too in-depth about the documentary, but trust me when I say it’s worth a watch. It sheds light on a problem that is getting worse and worse every day.
After watching this documentary, I realized that we are all part of the problem. We all in some way use plastic. It’s a hard problem to get rid of entirely so I wanted to compile a list of small ways that we can all contribute to living a more plastic-free life.
- Use Reusable Water Bottles/Cups
Plastic water bottles are my enemies. I seriously hate them so much. I get the convenience factor, but I still hate them. It’s so easy to go to TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Amazon, etc. to buy these items. This is my stainless steel water bottle that I take everywhere with me, especially traveling! The coffee cup that I’m using right now is this Starbucks reusable cup. - Use Reusable Straws
Nowadays people are becoming more aware of the single-use plastic straw problem and with good reason. I remember seeing this turtle video and nearly left in tears. I recently came across these really cool foldable straws. Some smaller steps you can take if you don’t want to buy reusable straws is not getting a straw/lid at all. It might be weird at first but it’s something small that we can all do. - Use Reusable Grocery Bags
There are many ways to get these. I know a lot of grocery stores nowadays have their own reusable bags. I personally bought mine from Ikea! Feel free to use them for anything, not just groceries. Another thing that you can do is to use reusable produce bags. I know I was guilty of using the plastic produce bags and just throwing them away after I was done unpacking. I found these on Amazon for a super good price. Shoutout to Austin, TX for banning plastic bags. I wish most cities banned them (looking at you Houston). - Use Biodegradable Coffee Stirs
Most of the coffee stirrers I saw online were the thin plastic ones and that is just as bad as the plastic straws. I never thought of this one until I was at work and had nothing to stir my coffee with. I purchased these. - Change Your Razor
Use a razor with replaceable blades instead of a disposable razor. Some of the razors brands that I’ve come across are Billie’s and Harry’s. Both offer great monthly plans.
I hope that by reading this you’ll be able to adopt at least one of these practices. I am very new to these practices myself and I slip up once in a while, but I hope that by sharing these tips with you all, it’ll keep me more accountable as well. This won’t solve the plastic problem entirely, but it’s the small things that we can all do to help.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a great day!
